Doing an online MBA while working full-time is the norm — all programs here are specifically designed for it. But managing both well requires planning. Here is what works.
Weekly time commitment
Most online MBA programs require 10–15 hours per week including live sessions and self-study. Typical schedule: 2 live sessions per week (2 hours each, usually Saturday morning and one weekday evening) + 5–7 hours of self-study. During exam periods this rises to 20+ hours for 2–3 weeks.
Telling your employer
Most professionals are nervous about disclosing their MBA to their employer — they worry it signals job dissatisfaction or distraction. In practice, most managers respond positively — an upskilling employee is an asset. Consider framing it as: "I'm doing this to be more effective in my current role." Many employers even support it financially if asked.
Which sessions are mandatory?
Live sessions attendance requirements vary. Manipal and Amrita require 75% attendance (recorded sessions are available for the rest). Chandigarh and LPU are more flexible. If you travel frequently for work, check the program's attendance policy before enrolling.
When is it too much?
Warning signs that the workload is unsustainable: falling behind by more than 2 weeks, consistently attending 0 live sessions, not submitting assignments. These patterns predict dropout. If this happens, talk to your program coordinator early — most universities offer semester freeze options.
